Cherbourg

Cherbourg or Cherbourg-Octeville is a town, cross channel port and commune in the Manche department. It is situated at the north of the Cotentin Peninsula. The city is the largest in the Manche department, although Saint-Lô is the prefecture (capital).

At the time of the 1999 census the amalgamated population of Cherbourg and Octeville had a population of 42,318 inhabitants.

The city is perhaps most familiar to Brits who enter France via the short crossing from Poole.
