The Normandy-Maine regional park (“parc regional Normandie-Maine”) was created in 1975, covers 234,000 hectares and comprises 151 communes; 101 in Orne, 5 in Manche, 22 in Mayenne and 23 Sarthe.
The “maison du parc”, with temporary exhibitions and information about the park for visitors, can be found in the chateau at Carrouges, in the Orne department. Here there is also an orchard with old varieties of pear and apple trees; not just for visitors, but also for local inhabitants, who can obtain root-stocks so that these traditional local varieties continue to flourish in the area.
And at Barenton Manche, a “maison de la pomme et de la poire” has been opened in conjunction with the park authorities to show how the traditional apple and pear products such as cider, perry and Calvados are made.
